The Gemperle Egg for Breakfast: A Key to Enhancing Children’s Academic Performance

A Gemperle Egg breakfast can improves cognitive function

Breakfast increases kid’s academic performance

As farmers and parents of school aged children at our Gemperle Egg Farm, we are always trying to figure out how we can help our kids achieve optimal academic success. One of the easiest and sometimes least recognized actions parents can do is to feed their kids BREAKFAST.  A breakfast that’s high in protein and nutritious keeps kid’s brain functioning tip top until lunch. At Gemperle Family Farms we believe that a quick egg based breakfast can do just that. Plus, making an egg breakfast is quick and easy.

It’s not controversial — just science based. Scientific research shows the adverse effects of skipping breakfast on cognitive function for school kids. Starting your day with breakfast improves alertness, attention, memory, processing of complex visuals, problem solving and math scores.
Below are some convincing “importance of breakfast” facts based on an evaluation of 63 scientific research studies by the Food Research and Action Center based in Washington DC.

• Skipping breakfast and being hungry impair children’s ability to learn. They are less able to differentiate between visuals and have a slower memory recall.
• Consuming breakfast improves children’s academic performance in math tasks and other demanding mental tasks.
• Students that received breakfast in school programs show improved attendance, behavior and standardized test scores
• Children reported that eating breakfast increased their energy and ability to pay attention in school
• Children perform better on tests of vocabulary and matching figures after eating breakfast
• Children that eat breakfast have better nutrition and more favorable weigh related characteristics (i.e. lower BMI, less obesity….).
• Breakfast improves children’s concentration, alertness, comprehension, memory and learning.

So as a parent, one of the most important things you can do for your child to help them achieve optimal school performance is – FEED THEM A HIGH QUALITY NUTRITIOUS BREAKFAST. And even better, a breakfast that contains eggs.

Eggs are one of the most nutritious of all breakfast foods and are quick and easy to prepare. Eggs contain one of the highest qualities of natural protein and are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids and choline. Omega 3 fatty acid plays a crucial role in brain function, growth and development. It is the little known choline in eggs that is the queen of brain function.  This essential nutrient maintains cell membrane structure, and is involved in the manufacture of neurotransmitters, which helps brain cells communicate with one another and muscle cells.
