Take a Peek Inside — Gemperle Farms Cage Free Egg Aviaries and Barns
Have you ever done a photo shoot with a few thousand ladies? It’s quite the commotion. Last December, I paid a visit to our hens, our lovely ladies, and did an amateur photo shoot. A few of the girls ignored me, a few posed with their feathers nicely preened and a few showed their shy side. All in all — the social setting was active, talkative and they were the stereotypical ladies in the hen house.
Gemperle Farms has been producing cage free eggs for nearly 20 years. In fact, we were one of the first major egg farmers to start producing cage free eggs in California.
If you don’t know much about cage free here are just a few key points ………. they come from hens that are free to roam either in large barns or tall aviaries with lots of room to participate in natural chicken behavior.
The color of the egg depends on the breed of hen. White hens, usually Leghorns, lay white eggs. And brown hens, usually Rhode Island Red’s, lay brown eggs.
The cage free living environments have lots of enrichments:
● A variety of different perches and private nesting areas
● Litter access on the floor for dust bathing — hens love this!
● Lots of room for socializing with the many hens in the flock
● They have easy access to fresh water and healthy grains for optimal health — this in turn produces the best tasting and most nutritious eggs.
I’m sure you realize that cage free eggs are a bit more expensive than regular eggs. This is mainly because they require more feed to produce each egg. Feed is an egg farmer’s biggest expense. Also, the brown variety of eggs are from larger hens that require more grain so normally you will pay a bit more for those beautiful brown eggs.
We are very dedicated to caring for our hens — so that you as a consumer can enjoy the most nutritious eggs. Our eggs are produced with the Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) Label. The HFAC is an international non-profit certification organization dedicated to improving the lives of farm animals in food production.
When you see the Certified Humane Raised and Handled® label you can be assured that the food products have come from farmers that meet precise, objective standards for farm animal treatment.
We love our hens and believe in producing eggs the natural way — with a healthy grain diet, no antibiotics and plenty or room to roam and socialize with other ladies. So when you buy Gemperle Farms eggs, you can be sure that no matter which type of egg you choose, you’ll always get nutritious, healthy and humanely farmed eggs for your family.
