It’s World Egg Day! We are Celebrating at Gemperle Farms!
What is World Egg Day?
We at Gemperle Farms are excited to celebrate World Egg Day. It was first celebrated in 1996 and was founded by the International Egg Commission at a conference that took place in Vienna Austria. The main idea behind World Egg Day was to raise awareness of the importance that eggs have in peoples lives and nutrition. World egg day is celebrated every year on the second Friday in October in more than 40 countries, from Australia to Zimbabwe. People around the world celebrate eggs as one of the best affordable sources of protein and their importance in feeding citizens all over the world.
Egg farmers across the world join together in their commitment to provide high quality affordable eggs to help feed the world’s hungry. Gemperle Farms alone donates approximately 500,000 eggs every year to local food banks and non profits to help feed the hungry in the Central Valley of California. We believe in giving back to our community in the best way we know how …… by providing a healthy, nutritious protein to those that live with food insecurity.
Importance of the Egg
We at Gemperle Farms get excited about World Egg Day since we are true believers in the importance of the egg in our daily diets. The nutritional punch of the egg, in our opinion, is far superior to that of other proteins. Here is a short summary of the egg’s nutritional highlights.
- Contains Vitamin D: Very few foods have naturally occurring Vitamin D– Eggs are one of these. 41 IU’s in each egg.
- High in Protein: Eggs have the highest-quality protein found in any food. One large egg contains 6.3 grams of protein and essential amino acids.
- Low Calorie Protein: A large egg has approximately 75 calories.
- Contains Omega 3 Fatty Acids: Omega 3 enriched eggs can have 300 mg per egg, while a regular egg about 35mg.
- Contains Lutein and Zeaxanthin: These are antioxidants that help keep our eyes healthy.
- Contains Choline: This nutrient found in the egg yolk is essential in regulating the brain function of adults by maintaining the structure of brain cell membranes.
Versatility of the Egg Across the World
I find it utterly amazing how many totally different types of egg dishes we can find around the globe. Eggs are such a universal food that we find them in cuisines around the globe from Mexico to India. The short video below produced by an Australian egg farmers organization exemplifies how eggs are a staple food source around the world. How many international dishes have come from your kitchen?
