Meatless Monday History
Asking citizens to do their share of helping with US and world problems is not a new idea. During difficult times, citizens have adjusted their lifestyles and stepped up to do their duty.
In fact, during the World War 1, due to allocation of war resources, Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation to all American to go meatless one day a week – Tuesdays. The idea was to reduce consumption of food staples to help the war effort. The campaign’s slogan was “Food will win the war” and the term “Meatless Tuesdays” was coined to assist this effort. Every citizen did their part whether young or old, male or female.
During World War 11, the campaign returned asking women as the homemakers to support the war effort. Rationing took place with many commodities such as meat, sugar and gasoline.
In 2003 Meatless Monday was created as a public health awareness program by the Monday Campaigns in association with the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Center for a livable Future. Monday, being the first day encourages Americans to make better and healthier decisions at the beginning of the week.
In 2009, Meatless Monday began to focus their campaign on the effects of meat consumption on climate change. They noted that reduction in meat consumption could greatly affect the rate of climate change and reduce each individuals carbon footprint of the food they ate.
Why Do Meatless Mondays?
By going meatless one day a week, we not only can improve our health but the overall health of the Mother Earth. As Michael Pollan’s famously quoted on the Opra Winfrey show in 2009 “Even one meatless day a week – a Meatless Monday, which is what we do in my household – if every American did that, that would be the equivalent of taking 20 million mid-sized sedans off the road”
