Neapolitan Pumpkin Squares:Nostalgic Gemperle Recipes

The matriarch of Gemperle Family Farms

Today is a nostalgic day. I’m starting to put together our Thanksgiving menu.  I began by perusing through a box of my mom’s old recipes — you know the kind that moms used to put on 3 x 5 cards and file in a bin. My mom, Annemarie Gemperle, the matriarch of Gemperle Family  Farms, and mother of seven was one of the best cooks I have known. I was quite a lucky child to have home-cooked food with a European and healthful twist before that was even trendy.

As I looked at the recipe card in her original handwriting, neat as I remember, perfectly Swiss, I realized that it was time to share some of her famous mouth-watering recipes. I miss mom, I wish I could have had another 20 years with her selfless love and calming smile. So now all I can do is try to revive her loving memory by recreating her recipes.

The Neapolitan Pumpkin Squares were one of her favorite Gemperle recipes from the 70s. With several teenagers in the household, they did not last long. I uploaded the original recipe with mom’s handwriting …. also thought it was cute how Pumpkin was misspelled… she spelled it like it sounds, like many American immigrants.

Fall is the perfect time to take advantage of all the pumpkins in the marketplace. I adjusted the recipe and used a market sugar pie pumpkin that I baked in the oven.  I froze the leftover pumpkin to use for other recipes like pumpkin pie and pumpkin soup. Need to add something new to your Thanksgiving menu ….. try our mom’s legendary recipe.
